Valeri Hakobyan
FIDE and USCF player
I started playing chess at 12 in Armenia, mostly sparring with Eduard while experimenting with chess openings and strategies. My passion for chess originated from the sense of a battle of wills and mental competition. I was intrigued by the psychological condition of a player, such as remaining nonchalant and focused during the whole course of the game. That’s how I initially gained confidence in the chess strategy.

The first tournament I played was for the 1st rank where I got 7 out of 7. Later I started participating in international tournaments such as Stepan Avagyan Memorial U-18 in Jermuk (2014), Sharjah Summer Championship U1500, Abu Dhabi Int. Chess Festival Open Tournament (2017), National Open (2021), World Open (2021), etc.

My classes involve…
I have been teaching individual and group classes for 7 years to students of different levels and ages. The class will address each student’s needs based on the level and playing style. The first step involves analyzing student’s games to identify the strengths and weaknesses. In general the class focuses on opening study, middlegame strategy, endgame technique and tactical vision. Through analyzing your games, we’ll do a better job at identifying and eradicating weaknesses that keep you from achieving high results. Solving puzzles on time will give us an opportunity to work on the tactical vision to spot the tricks players commonly use in time trouble. As a bonus, we’ll review a few games of chess classics and try to reveal the deep ideas hidden behind their moves.

As a part of the homework, you can have a look at the YouTube videos published on the channel Chamber of Chess to observe basic motives applied in the games and studies. The rate is $50/h.

What you will learn in 5 classes…
During your chess journey, you will sharpen your basic opening and endgame skills. The habit of making fast decisions will help you avoid time trouble. Eventually, you’ll get a clearer picture of positional and tactical maneuvering. As a bonus, it will boost your confidence and maintain a positive attitude during the game.
